Dry Fire Training: The Complete Guide to Practicing at Home and Choosing the Right Training Aids

Dry-fire practice is one of the simplest ways to stay connected to your skills between range days, and for A Girl & A Gun members, it is also an opportunity to learn more about how your firearm, your gear, and your body work together. A few focused minutes can reveal whether your grip is consistent, whether your sights come into view the way you expect, whether your holster is truly working for you, and whether the skills you rely on feel as familiar as they should. Because confidence is built through repetition, not assumption, making dry fire part of your regular training routine can help turn occasional practice into lasting proficiency.

Drill of the Month: Kelly’s 3×3 Reload Challenge

Some of the best drills are born from a simple idea, a handful of ammunition, and a shooter who looks at the range and thinks, “You know what would make this more interesting?”

Meet Kelly Palomera from the Southern Maine Chapter. Kelly has been a vital part of the Southern Maine A-Team for the past five years. She is an avid pistol shooter, a certified NRA pistol instructor, a Chief Range Safety Officer (CRSO), and a NRA certified shotgun instructor who also teaches shotgun through L.L.Bean’s women’s programs to name a few of her shooting accomplishments. She is inventive, creative, always ready for a challenge, and exactly the kind of person you want dreaming up new ways to keep range day interesting.

This month, we are featuring one of Kelly’s creations: a deceptively simple drill that combines accuracy, reloads, target transitions, mental processing, and a little friendly competition.

It can be run as an individual challenge, a head-to-head competition, or a chapter activity. Better yet, it is easy to modify for different shooter skill levels.

Beyond the Malfunction

Then something interesting happens. The mechanics are no longer the challenge. The questions simply change. Experienced shooters eventually discover that restoring the firearm to operation is only half the lesson. The more valuable question is, Why did it stop in the first place? That shift marks an important stage in a shooter’s development. The goal is no longer to simply solve the problem. The goal is to understand it well enough to keep it from happening again. That is where some of the most valuable conversations in advanced training begin.

AR-15 Rifle vs. 9mm PCC: What’s the Difference?

Many modern PCCs are built on the same AR platform as a traditional AR-15. They feel familiar in your hands, accept many of the same accessories, and operate with nearly identical controls. But while they share a common manual of arms, they were designed around two very different cartridges, and that single design decision influences everything from how they operate and how far they shoot effectively to the competitions they’re used for and the training required to use them effectively. Many of the handling skills transfer between the two platforms, but the ballistic performance, operating systems, and intended applications do not. This article takes a closer look.

Mechanical Safeties and Decockers: Building Reliability Under Stress

Mechanical safeties and decockers are more than firearm features. When integrated into a consistent shooting process, they help shooters build safer, more reliable, and repeatable performance under pressure. Rather than treating these controls as isolated tasks, competitive and defensive shooters should incorporate disengaging the safety into the draw and presentation, and use the safety or decocker to reinforce the transition from engagement to assessment, movement, or holstering. As training becomes more complex through movement, target transitions, reloads, and decision-making, these integrated habits help maintain firearm control, improve consistency, and reduce errors. While speed is an important performance metric, long-term success depends on developing a reliable process that connects firearm manipulation, visual processing, decision-making, and safe gun handling into one seamless sequence, ultimately building confidence through disciplined, repeatable execution.

Which Reload Method Is Faster, More Efficient, and More Accurate? There comes a point in your training when opinions stop mattering. The timer tells the truth. It shows you where you are fast. Do you rack the slide, or use the slide lever? The answer is simple. You test both and let your performance decide.

Cold Hits Don’t Lie: Measuring Real Shooting Performance

Let’s start with the uncomfortable part. Cold drills do not care how good you looked last weekend. They do not care how much ammo you brought. They do not care if your grip “usually settles in by magazine three.” Cold drills are truth serum. There is no warm up and nowhere to hide. Whether you are a concealed carrier, a competitive shooter, an instructor, or someone who simply wants an honest snapshot of current skill level, cold performance tells you exactly what you own today. Not what you could do. Not what you did once. What you can do right now.

I’m going to lay out practical, responsible short-range engagement drills, sight management tips, and ways to discriminate threats under stress. No scary military jargon, just real-world skills that can save your butt and maybe even earn you a badass reputation at brunch.

Building Confidence One Hand at a Time

Life throws curveballs, and sometimes those curveballs mean one of your hands is occupied; holding a flashlight, fending off a threat, wrangling a toddler, or bracing against an obstacle. That’s why we train not just with two hands, but with one.

The dominant-hand-only skillset is often overlooked until shooters are thrown into a match stage that requires it, or worse, until life demands it. It’s humbling. The gun feels heavier. Your sights dance like they’ve had one too many cups of coffee. And yet, this is where true mastery begins.

This month’s drill isn’t about showing off; it’s about building competence, composure, and confidence when you’re operating with just your strong hand.

Mastering the Art of Target Transitions

For pistol shooters, target transitions aren’t just a nice-to-have—they’re a must. In self-defense, threats don’t politely line up one at a time; they can come from different directions or be spaced out, making it crucial to quickly and accurately move from one target to the next. This skill can literally be a lifesaver. In competitive shooting, those tiny fractions of a second can make all the difference. But it’s not just about being fast—you’ve got to hit your mark with precision, avoiding any penalties for missed shots or hitting a no-shoot target. Finding that sweet spot between speed and accuracy takes practice, but it’s worth it.

DRILL OF THE MONTH – Dueling Diva

Target transition skills involve quickly and accurately shifting focus and aim to achieve multiple shots across multiple targets. For pistol shooters, mastering this skill is crucial in both self-defense and competitive shooting scenarios. Mastering target transitions requires building synergy between the visual aspect of sight acquisition, visually shifting and processing the next target and the physical aspect of moving the gun into realignment on the next target and physically taking the shot(s). This month’s Drill of the Month is a practice exercise to enhance the shooter’s ability to transition smoothly and quickly between multiple targets while maintaining accuracy.
