Fix Your Reload, Find Your Speed

Every shooter wants faster reloads, but the shooters who seem impossibly quick are rarely chasing speed itself. They are chasing efficiency. Smooth reloads are built through consistency, awareness, and disciplined movement that removes wasted motion before the timer ever reflects improvement. A clean reload is not about frantic hands or rushed decisions. It is about building repeatable habits that allow the gun, the magazine, and the shooter to work together without hesitation. When indexing becomes automatic, vision stays connected to the target, and both hands move with purpose, reloads stop feeling like a rushed interruption and start becoming a seamless part of the shooting process. These five principles break down the small details that separate fumbled reloads from confident, efficient gun handling, and once understood, they have the power to transform performance on the range.

Trigger Control Starts in the Mind: Building Confidence Behind the Gun

Your brain pulled that shot long before your finger did. For new and intermediate pistol shooters, trigger control issues are often cognitive before they are mechanical. Hesitation at the wall. Over-confirming the sight picture. Fear-based anticipation. These are not finger strength problems. They are confidence and decision-making problems. If you want better handgun accuracy and stronger shooting performance, you must train your mind as deliberately as you train your grip.

Trigger Reset. Ride It or Release It? A Smarter Approach to Faster, More Accurate Shooting

If there were an Olympic sport for overcomplicating handgun fundamentals, trigger reset would medal every time. Trigger reset is one of the most debated topics in handgun training. If you have spent any time in a concealed carry class, competition bay, or defensive pistol course, you have likely heard the same instruction repeated with certainty: pin the trigger to the rear, slowly release until you feel the click, hold it there, then press again. So the question remains. Should you ride the trigger reset, or should you release it fully?

Strong Hand Only Shooting: Top 5 Tips to Improve Accuracy and Control

Someone, somewhere, probably told you that shooting with one hand is difficult. The reality is that when you shoot with both hands, each hand exerts influence on the gun. Sometimes that input stabilizes the pistol, and sometimes it introduces errors. Think of it as a 50/50 partnership. Each hand has the power to help or to hurt. Managing Hot Brass: Tips to Stay Safe When Things Get Spicy!

Hot brass is a phrase that might seem benign until you’ve experienced the sharp, stinging pain of a spent casing landing on your skin. Mastering the Art of Target Transitions

For pistol shooters, target transitions aren’t just a nice-to-have—they’re a must. In self-defense, threats don’t politely line up one at a time; they can come from different directions or be spaced out, making it crucial to quickly and accurately move from one target to the next. This skill can literally be a lifesaver. In competitive shooting, those tiny fractions of a second can make all the difference. But it’s not just about being fast—you’ve got to hit your mark with precision, avoiding any penalties for missed shots or hitting a no-shoot target. Finding that sweet spot between speed and accuracy takes practice, but it’s worth it.

Understanding Squib Malfunctions

A squib malfunction, often referred to simply as a “squib,” occurs when a bullet fails to exit the barrel of a firearm due to insufficient propellant charge. Unlike the experience of taking a normal shot, a squib produces a much quieter report and negligible recoil. This malfunction is particularly dangerous because it can lead to a catastrophic failure if another round is fired without clearing the obstruction.

Racking the Slide

Racking the slide is necessary to learn to function in a semi-automatic handgun. The term racking the slide means to manually cycle the slide backward and release it to go forward into the battery. By manually cycling the slide, we can achieve several critical tasks. Racking the slide allows shooters to chamber a round and clear a malfunction; after removing a magazine, racking the slide can allow a shooter to clear the chamber of the gun. For some, racking the slide can be frustrating at first and, if not done correctly, can cause a common range boo-boo, slide-bite. However, with the correct safety and technique and a few detailed tips, racking the slide can be done with success!

Top 3 Tips for Slide Manipulations

Arguably, the most frustrating part of shooting semiautomatic handguns for new shooters is slide manipulations. Feeling as though you can’t safely rack the slide, overcome its inherent resistance thanks to the recoil spring, and simultaneously keep the trigger finger and muzzle under control can be a significant deterrent in maintaining women coming back to the range. Usually, this is due to needing to be appropriately introduced to the three tasks related to slide manipulation. Women don’t necessarily need more physique or physical strength to manipulate the slide; it’s the correct technique.
