Setting the Standard for Women in Firearms | Training. Insights. Intelligence.

March & June • Virginia International Raceway

Firepower, horsepower, and three days of doing things you’ve probably never imagined yourself doing! Most defensive firearms training focuses on what happens when you are standing on the range, but real life rarely gives you that kind of controlled environment. Much of your day is spent in or around a vehicle, navigating parking lots, gas stations, traffic, and the transitional spaces where awareness and good decisions matter.

A Girl & A Gun’s DRIFT (Driver Response & Integrated Field Tactics) Academy® takes defensive training into that real-world environment. Over three immersive training days at Virginia International Raceway, you’ll explore vehicle defense from every angle, combining personal security, firearms tactics, vehicle dynamics, ballistics, and evasive driving into one extraordinary experience. You won’t just talk about what you might do. You’ll get behind the wheel, work in and around vehicles, test concepts firsthand, and develop a much deeper understanding of how to protect yourself and your family when your vehicle becomes part of the problem.

Personal Security

Build situational awareness, recognize surveillance and tracking behaviors, understand transitional-space risks, and practice defensive options, including OC deployment.

Firearms Tactics

Explore concealed carry in and around vehicles, learn firearm deployment and vehicle tactics, and see firsthand how bullets interact with automotive materials.

Evasive Driving

Get behind the wheel for professional instruction in vehicle dynamics, accident avoidance, skid control, emergency maneuvers, and evasive driving techniques.

About DRIFT Academy

DRIFT Academy® approaches vehicle defense as a complete system. What you notice before an encounter, the decisions you make as a situation develops, your ability to control your vehicle, and the defensive tools available to you can all affect the outcome. Rather than teaching those skills in isolation, DRIFT brings them together through three distinct training experiences.

Track Training: Discover what a vehicle can actually do when you need more from it than your daily commute demands. You’ll experience rollover training, skid control, traffic maneuvers, tech-line driving, off-road recovery, driver-down scenarios, and PIT-avoidance techniques that help you maintain control when another vehicle attempts to force you off the road. These exercises build confidence behind the wheel while giving you practical experience responding when traction, control, or the circumstances around you suddenly change.

Personal Security & Driving Skills: Step back from the mechanics of driving to focus on the decisions that can prevent an emergency from escalating in the first place. Classroom instruction explores situational awareness, personal security, threat recognition, and the choices available when avoidance and escape are still possible. Then you’ll put concepts into motion with hands-on exercises, including using a vehicle to ram through an obstruction when escape is necessary. Even time on the go-kart track becomes an opportunity to explore vehicle dynamics, decision-making, and control.

Range & Vehicle Defense: Take defensive training beyond the traditional firing line by exploring what happens when firearms and vehicles intersect. You’ll learn about automotive ballistics, work through firearm tactics in and around vehicles, and practice OC deployment as an additional defensive option. The focus is not simply on shooting, but on understanding how positioning, movement, vehicle construction, available tools, and good decision-making affect your options in a real-world encounter.

When time and facility availability allow, the learning continues with additional vehicle skills and challenges. Want to learn how to drive a manual transmission? Need to finally master parallel parking? This is the place to do it! DRIFT is about becoming a more capable, confident driver and defender, whether the skill is one you need in an emergency or one you simply never had the opportunity to learn.

DRIFT Academy® is an active, hands-on experience. Participants should be comfortable getting in and out of vehicles repeatedly, standing and walking for portions of the training day, safely handling training equipment, and participating in driving exercises.

If you’re not comfortable with a particular exercise, that’s okay. Participants may choose to sit out individual activities, such as the rollover or ramming exercises, if they have concerns about a previous injury or their ability to participate safely.

Training takes place both indoors and outdoors, so come prepared for changing weather conditions and three full days of activity.

No, DRIFT Academy® is designed for A Girl & A Gun members across a wide range of experience levels, and no advanced firearms or performance-driving experience is required. Professional instruction introduces you to skills and concepts you may never have encountered before and gives you the opportunity to safely explore them in a controlled environment.

Because DRIFT is open to multiple experience levels, the hands-on firearms component uses airsoft equipment. The airsoft equipment and holsters used during training are provided as part of your registration.

Each year, VIR draws tens of thousands of spectators for racing, concerts, and events. Within the property’s rolling hills and miles of lush forest, guests can enjoy unique amenities such as the VIR Club, karting, off-road racing, skeet shooting, pistol, and rifle ranges, skidpad, dining options more. An even cooler fact is that VIR is owned by a woman: the incredible Ms. Connie Nyholm, who left her career in New York real estate to turn the weed-infested, overgrown track into today’s world-class road racing and destination facility.
