The AG & AG Effect: How Experience Transforms Women’s Firearm Choices

For many shooters, buying a firearm is just the beginning of a longer journey. A first handgun often leads to a concealed carry pistol, a training pistol, a home‑defense option, or perhaps a competition setup. As skills grow and confidence builds, so do opinions about manufacturers and the features that matter most.

Recent A Girl & A Gun member surveys show a clear pattern: firsthand experience is one of the strongest forces shaping women’s purchasing decisions. The results offer insight into how women discover new firearm brands, where they turn for trustworthy advice, and why positive experiences often lead them back to the same manufacturer for future purchases.

Trying New Brands

One of the biggest advantages of participating in A Girl & A Gun is the exposure it provides to a wide variety of firearms and gear. Members handle and shoot different platforms at chapter meetings, matches, training classes, and national conferences, often trying firearms they might never have considered on their own.

The survey results suggest those experiences make a difference. More than half of respondents said their participation has made them more open to trying new firearm brands. While others reported becoming more confident in the brand they already preferred. Combined 70% of respondents say that that brand matters.

Online reviews and videos can be helpful, but they can’t replicate the feel of a grip, the break of a trigger, or the way a pistol manages recoil. Side‑by‑side comparisons on the range give members a clearer sense of what fits their needs, and those impressions tend to stick.

Trusted Sources Matter

Exposure to different firearms and gear is only the first step. Once a shooter begins considering a purchase, the question shifts from what they’ve tried to whose advice they trust.

Survey responses show that A Girl & A Gun resources—its website, social media, instructors, facilitators, and fellow members—are the most relied‑upon sources of information at 39%. Other inputs like YouTube, friends and family, gun store employees, firearm websites, outside instructors, social media, and magazine articles still play a role, but personal relationships and firsthand experience carry more weight when members are ready to make a decision.

This reflects one of the organization’s greatest strengths. Members don’t simply hear recommendations—they ask questions, compare experiences, and often see the same firearms being used in classes, matches, and everyday carry. Advice comes from people with real experience, not anonymous online reviews.

Confidence Leads to Future Purchases

As shooters gain experience, many find a manufacturer that consistently meets their expectations. Familiar controls, reliable performance, and comfortable ergonomics build confidence, and that confidence often extends to future purchases.

Survey data shows that once members trust a brand, 64% are very likely to consider additional models from the same manufacturer. A positive experience with a compact carry pistol may lead to choosing the same brand’s full‑size home‑defense gun or a competition model.

This pattern suggests loyalty isn’t driven by marketing alone. It’s earned through repeated positive experiences and reinforced by trusted recommendations.

A Clear Pattern

Taken together, the surveys tell a consistent story. Hands‑on experience introduces members to new firearm brands. Trusted relationships help them navigate purchasing decisions. Positive experiences shape what they buy next.

The takeaway?  Creating opportunities for women to experience firearms in a supportive environment may be one of the most effective ways to build informed, confident, and loyal customers.
