A Girl & A Gun Combatives Camp Equips Women with Real-World Self-Defense Skills in Powerful, Hands-On Weekend

Austin, TX – (AGirlandAGun.org) — From September 12–14, 20 women from across the country gathered at Martial Way Legacy in Austin, TX, for the 2025 A Girl & A Gun Combatives Camp, a three-day immersive training experience designed to help women build confidence, capability, and control in real-world self-defense.

This transformational event brought together women of all backgrounds and skill levels to learn practical, hands-on combatives in a safe, welcoming, and empowering environment. Unlike classroom-based seminars, Combatives Camp was a fully interactive experience that prepared women to protect themselves in the kinds of close-contact scenarios that can happen anytime, anywhere.

“We are proud to offer this training to help women become well-rounded self-defenders,” said Robyn Sandoval, President & CEO of A Girl & A Gun. “Our members gain the confidence to respond with a variety of tools and techniques, whether it’s their hands, improvised objects, or a firearm. This camp is about owning your personal safety with competence and courage.”

Real Training for Real Life

Under the expert guidance of Guro Larry St. Clair and the Martial Way Legacy Team, attendees trained in:

  • Foundations of Empty-Hand Defense
  • Disarms, Weapon Retention, and Fitness Conditioning
  • Knife Defense & Ground Survival Techniques
  • Flexible Weapons & Improvised Tools
  • Live Scenario-Based Decision-Making

With small student-to-instructor ratios, participants received personalized coaching in every drill, ensuring a supportive and inclusive experience for both beginners and experienced practitioners.

“This wasn’t a sit-and-watch kind of weekend,” said Loretta Paul from Colorado. “It was intense, empowering, and exactly what I needed to feel more capable in my daily life.”

Beyond Technique: Building a Community of Strength

The training was tough by design, and the sense of community was just as strong as the physical skills developed.

“You don’t rise to the occasion. You fall back on your training,” said Guro Larry St. Clair. “These women showed up, did the work, and left more prepared to face the world.”

Whether walking to a car alone at night or traveling through unfamiliar territory, attendees left the event with a sharpened mindset and real tools to protect themselves and others.
